Free yogurt! Montgomery's 32 Degrees shop to treat 32 lucky customers for a full year
By: Brad Harper

A local frozen yogurt bar has come up with a sweet way to top off its first year.

To celebrate its one-year anniversary today, Montgomery’s 32 Degrees will give away free yogurt for a year to 32 people who come during the day and register at the Shoppes at EastChase location. The store will be open noon to 10 p.m.

The store’s manager, Angela Titchenell, said customers also will be able to try a new product today — Greek yogurt, in honey and black cherry flavors. There will be other giveaways as well.

“We’re going to have a fantastic anniversary party,” Titchenell said. “It’s so much fun to see the kids come in with a smile on their faces, and adults get to be a kid again.”

The store added a Twister machine a few weeks ago, which allows customers to make Blizzard-style treat using toppings of their choice. The store regularly rotates its choices of ingredients, but one constant has been the number of customers throughout the year, Titchenell said, as the city has embraced the new offerings.

“I thought with us opening in the wintertime, it would be a little bit down, but it’s been a true blessing,” she said.

She said everyone has their personal favorite concoction — hers is espresso-and-vanilla frozen yogurt with chocolate chips and caramel toppings — and that the store focuses on offering locally bought fruit every day.

That’s not the only benefit of operating in the River Region. She said the diversity of the area’s residents helps keep support strong.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham-based frozen yogurt chain 32 degrees continues to expand its menu, an effort to set itself apart in a crowded market.

The company has introduced Greek frozen yogurt, the latest in a series of new menu items.

While all of the company's frozen yogurt has health benefits, the Greek frozen yogurt takes it to a new level, said Jenny Buha, director of development and marketing for 32 degrees.

"It is a growing trend across the industry, especially because of its added health benefits, which is high protein content and high calcium," she said. "It has double the protein of the yogurt we offer in the store now."

32 Degrees Featured on NRN.com

32 Degrees was recently featured on NRN.com in an article titled, "Franchisees strive for success as new franchisors of Bagger Dave's, 32 Degrees."  The article discusses how Jeff Pizitz has used his vast knowledge of franchising, gained from decades working as a top franchisee, to transition into the role of franchisor with 32 Degrees. The article notes that this experience as a franchisee would help Jeff find both ideal operators and store locations. Jeff shares that 32 Degrees does not necessarily seek to be the biggest, fastest-growing franchisor but instead wants to find the right operators who will be able to help distinguish 32 Degrees from competitors in their own communities.  Click here for the entire article or begin below.

Franchisees strive for success as new franchisors of Bagger Dave's, 32 Degrees
By: Mark Brandau

After having spent many years as franchisees of other restaurants, Michael Ansley and Jeff Pizitz are drawing upon their experience to recruit the right operators and grow in the optimal markets as first-time franchisors of proprietary brands.

Both men continue to lead franchise organizations: Ansley’s Diversified Restaurant Holdings runs 22 Buffalo Wild Wings units, while Pizitz Management Group is the largest franchisee of Great American Cookies, with 38 locations. Both also branched out and created their own restaurant concepts a few years ago, with Ansley developing Bagger Dave’s Legendary Burger Tavern and Pizitz founding frozen-yogurt brand 32 Degrees.

Social media has put the consumer at the top of the list, instead of the other way around. It has given us, you and I, the voice. We are the interactors, the game-changers. Brands no longer talk at us, but with us.

SECRET WEAPON: Founder of 32 Degrees Walks the Talk as Largest Great American Cookies® Franchisee

15-Unit Hot Yogurt Franchise Banks on Customization and Healthful Products as FroYo’s Resurgence

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — If the founder of 32 Degrees a Yogurt Bar had a nickel for every time he was asked if frozen yogurt can reemerge as a viable food service category, he might not need to franchise the 15-unit concept he founded in 2010. But as retail and food franchisee veteran Jeff Pizitz explained, he not only witnessed the first frozen yogurt boom and bust of the 1990s, he knows where those concepts went wrong and believes he’s learned the solutions that will help the category heat up again.

“Those concepts had pretty limited offerings, about four to six flavors per store, and they didn’t evolve much,” said Pizitz, President of Pizitz Management Group, the country’s largest Great American Cookies franchisee. “They hadn’t pushed toward the healthful aspect like you see yogurt concepts doing today, and there was no customizing your order like customers get to do now. It’s a whole different experience and customers love it.”

Pizitz got the idea for 32° after running across a similar yogurt shop that never lacked a line out the door. When he visited the store, he recognized a great opportunity he imagined was untapped nationally. To confirm his suspicion, he flew to several cities across the country to check out similar concepts and found many single-store operators generous with their business experience. Soon after he formed a plan, hired an architect, found a location and opened the first 32° A Yogurt Bar®unit in 2010.

“We were very confident that this concept would work, partly because we knew we could create a concept that would allow us to become a big player in the category,” Pizitz said. “Add in our company’s quarter century of experience in the cookie business and we could see that it is a fairly easy concept to operate. You’re basically dealing with making one product, and customers serve themselves. That’s not a complex operational plan and customers like the ’create-your-own’ experience.”

Pizitz also noted the low barriers to entry into frozen yogurt: Well-made equipment is widely available, and large yogurt distributors with wide access nationally are easily found. Those benefits, he believes, help make 32 Degrees an easy-to-franchise brand.

“Even then, we’re planning slow and steady growth without the goal of merely opening franchises anywhere we can,” he said, adding that he plans to open three to five stores in 2012. “We don’t want franchisees to fail, we want them to be successful. So explosive growth is not important to us.”

Nor is making a profit on sales of products or equipment to franchisees. As a longtime franchisee now becoming a franchisor, Pizitz acknowledges he is eager for the chance to treat his future franchisees as he would like to be treated.

“Any product we offer to our franchisees will have no mark up,” he said. “A lot of franchisors use the sale of food, paper goods and equipment to their franchisees as a profit center, but we’re not going to nickel and dime them that way. Our responsibility is to help them become successful, which makes us successful.”
